Today’s quick escape happened out of sheer necessity: outside of my home office the weather was far too good to spend the entire day indoors. There’s never a good reason to not go cycling outside — apart, maybe, from gale force winds, torrential rain or double-digits below freezing.
With temperatures around 10°C, and much higher in the sun, I could have practically worn bib shorts! Whatever you pack these days is easily too warm. But right now, it should be winter, I mean, truly frickin’, freezin’ cold winter!
Never mind. With Rapha’s “#Festive500” only a week away, I’m prepping for long rides sub-zero. And, hooray! My search for warm feet has finally borne fruit in the form and colors of pictured “Castelli Gregge” cycling winter socks.
Styling and taste are very peculiar qualities, but fit and colors couldn’t suit me better. The socks are a Merino wool blend (warm, friendly on the olfactory senses), have a 12 cm cuff (don’t conflict with my calves) and are pleasantly well padded on the heel, sole and front (no bulk).
The Gregge are not anatomically shaped (left vs. right), but this can be a plus as I don’t have to pay attention to which goes where and it’s sufficient to just put them on properly, avoiding wrinkles, etc.
They now have to stand up to a longer-term (endurance) test under real-life conditions.
